The power of sound 13/07/2011
I recently got a Ukulele, I learned to play both Piano and Violin as a child but due to many things a whole load of negativity is attached to these intruments and I haven't played either for nearly 10 years. I really wanted to pick up an instrument however and I wanted it to be fun, it needed to be small enough so I could easily take it along to places and it would not take up to much space in the house. I was thinking of guitar since I have an acoustic in the loft but its large and not easily taken along with you. In stepped the Ukulele and I was sold. Its tiny about the same size as a violin, which incidentally caused me some issues with holding it. Habit said hold it under your chin whilst the brain said hold it like a ukulele and the first strums did not look pretty! It has a good range and I can play practically any song I want on it. Yesterdays repetoire consisted out of soft kitty, the happy birthday song and mad world by tears for fears. Not really playing music for this long made me forget just how powerful sound is and how strongly we react to it. I was sitting in the livingroom tinkering with the strings. It was strung with cheap cheap strings and I hadn't recieved the decent string yet but I really wanted to play. Cheap strings go out of tune really quickly especially in the beginning, if you can make it to the end of a song with everything in tune you've done really well. So in an atempt to settle the strings I was just randomly plucking the strings in what ended up as quite a melodic tune after a few minutes I felt myself in that happy meditative state and to my surprise found the boys all sitting around me doin the same. They where just happily sitting breathing deeply and relaxed. And especially for ds2 the being relaxed whilst being awake is something that is very hard for him. He allways reminds me of a string that is too tight, yet here he was, all relaxed. We allready use sound a lot in our home, we have music we dance the sillies out with, have our noisy stuff to clear the energy out with and a mindfulness bel that gets invited troughout the day to create a brief moment of calm. I for some reason had not considered using music to create calm quite in this way before, which since I am happy to put on some tunes to meditate with is pretty weird. I am glad to have put them together and plan to use music to create calm much more often either by playing myself or by putting on some meditative music. If you too would like to add some sacred sound power to your life and you are a fellow circle goddess check out the tune made by Fabeku Fatunmise in the creating a goddess haven course. If you aren't a goddess (and I guess when you are too) check out the free awesomesauce on Fabeku's site. He blogs and tweets too!
