Enjoying the little things in life 10/10/2011
It's a blustery day today, the chickens fly trough the garden without even having to stretch their wings. I love windy days, they clear the air out. As long as its not too cold I open all the windows and doors and let the wind clear my home. We prepared a few more vegetables beds today getting rid of the courgettes that had now truly finished and covering the soil with cardboard so weeds won't think of taking over. This morning we baked bread and a cake. We where given a Herman 8 days ago. Herman was a yeasty stretchy starter much like the sourdough bread we make, I'd never tried a cake like this. It came out beautifully, much denser than normal cake with bits of apple (from the garden) and raisins. I will probably end up giving a fair bit to hubby to take into work tomorrow as it made rather a lot. I have starter to share so if you'd like one and you are in the UK drop me a mail :) Euan and I are busy debating what to grow next year. We have our tried and true veg and some new ones to try. All our vegetable seed comes from real seeds, everything is open polinating no F1 or GMO rubbish in my garden! I actually have nightmares about GMO! We have been working hard on improving the soil since we are on heavy waterlogged clay that doesn't grow anything. Next year I also hope to expand on my collection of Bach flower remedy plants. I have a small selection and I would like to try and grow all of the 37 varieties in my garden (38 is rockwater which is a tad more difficult to grow ;) The wild rose has done very well this year and I will be plucking the hips some point this week to make syrup from. Rosehip syrup is delicious and something I fondly remember from my childhood. One of the luxeries my mum would buy at the start of the winter. I love this transition part of the year and all the simple pleasures that come with it hope you are enjoying it too! Add Comment |
